Description

This is the sixth edition of the classic textbook that has been introducing Paul and his writing to seminary and undergraduate students for over forty years. Roetzel provides a comprehensive look at Paul in light of recent scholarship and theological understandings of Paul. This new edition includes an additional chapter on the place of the Gentiles and the Law in the Judaisms of Paul’s day, an updated bibliography for further study, and additional changes that note the ongoing study of Paul with a broadened context. This long- established textbook is the ideal choice for any student of Paul.

Reviews

“For forty years Cal Roetzel has been an honest broker of the complex, conflictual, and evolving dynamic that existed between Paul, his beliefs, and his churches. Roetzel wrote this book to help his undergraduate students make sense of Paul’s writings, but its reach is much broader. Not only undergraduates but seminarians, pastors, and professors will gain a deeper appreciation of the apostle Paul’s radical and deft ‘theologizing’ through Roetzel’s carefully crafted book.”
—Steven J. Kraftchick, Professor of the Practice of New Testament Interpretation, Candler School of Theology, Emory University

“Calvin Roetzel’s book, The Letters of Paul, has achieved near-classic status in the field. It is a pleasure, therefore, to see it being reissued in yet another revision from Roetzel’s indefatigable pen. Highly recommended.”
—Daniel Boyarin, Hermann P. and Sophia Taubman Professor of Talmudic Culture, University of California, Berkeley
