Description

This new volume, replacing The Westminster Dictionary of Spirituality by Gordon S. Wakefield (1983), stands as the definitive reference work on all aspects of Christian spirituality. Several years in the making and comprised of more than four hundred completely new entries, this volume incorporates the collective expertise of today’s foremost scholars in the field of Christian spirituality. Systematically organized and alphabetically arranged for maximum ease of use, the book includes comprehensive bibliographies; a section of short essays on the content, methods, and current debates in the field; and reading lists to encourage additional reading and research.

Reviews

Christian Century (June 13, 2006) “This fine revision has taken the measure of a burgeoning field of interest and, instead of surrendering to its built-in unwieldiness, has provided a guide that is both intelligent and balanced for readers of almost every level. The study of Christian spirituality will be greatly enhanced by its availability.” –David Stewart, directory of library services, Luther Seminary, St. Paul, MN

The Presbyterian Outlook (January 16, 2006) “[T]his new volume will prove to be an invaluable resource for those who are passionate about the history and practice of spirituality in the church.” –Randy Harris, Book Review Editor

Worship (Vol. 80, No. 1, January 2006)

Theology Today (Vol. 62, No. 4, Jan. 2006) “All the names you would expect to find among the contributors are here, and then some. Under Sheldrake’s guidance, they have produced a superb reference work, which belongs in theological, church, and public libraries.” –C. Clifton Black, Princeton Theological Seminary

From The Christian Chronicle (October 2005) “For those who desire a survey of the latest interests in spirituality, the Westminster dictionary is an important resource.”

From Curled Up With a Good Book (online journal) Fall 2005–Four Stars “The list of contributors is a “who’s who” in the field of Christian spirituality.”
